Dearborn Park’s wooded areas and natural spaces are an important part of what makes our park special. Recently, we’ve noticed pumpkins and other food items being left in the woods, likely with good intentions — but this can actually cause harm.

While pumpkins are natural, they are not part of the native ecosystem. Leaving them in the woods can:
- Attract rodents and other wildlife to areas they don’t normally frequent
- Disrupt natural feeding behaviors
- Introduce mold, fungi, or non-native seeds
- Create cleanup and maintenance issues for volunteers and staff
Food waste — even biodegradable items — should not be left in natural areas of the park.

What to do instead:
- Compost pumpkins at home
- Break them down and mix into your own garden soil
We appreciate everyone who helps care for Dearborn Park and supports its long-term health. Small actions make a big difference.
Thank you for being good stewards of our shared green space.
