Congratulations to Liam Mellon on officially becoming an Eagle Scout! Liam’s project was building and repairing footbridges in Dearborn Park that span muddy sections of Dearborn Park Trail. This will help maintain the path and support #LeaveNoTrace principles. Liam has been on this journey for many years and has earned all the badges necessary and is amongst only 6% of Scouts who earn this badge. Kevin Polite, Friends of Dearborn Park Volunteer Coordinator, was proud and honored to attend the ceremony on behalf of #DearbornPark #park Dekalb County Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Affairs Park Pride.
The Eagle Scout Service Project is the culminating achievement of a Scout’s journey to earning the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest honor in the Boy Scouts of America. This project requires Scouts to demonstrate leadership by planning, organizing, and executing a significant service initiative that benefits the community. Liam Mellon’s Eagle Scout Service Project focused on enhancing Dearborn Park’s trail system by building and repairing footbridges over muddy sections of the Dearborn Park Trail. His efforts not only improved accessibility for visitors but also aligned with Leave No Trace principles, helping to minimize environmental impact and preserve the park’s natural beauty. Liam’s dedication to this project reflects both his commitment to conservation and his leadership in community service, leaving a lasting impact on Dearborn Park for years to come.

The Leave No Trace principles emphasize responsible outdoor ethics to minimize human impact on nature. In Dearborn Park, these principles are crucial for preserving its trails, wildlife, and natural beauty. By building and repairing footbridges, Liam Mellon’s Eagle Scout Service Project helps prevent soil erosion, keeps hikers on designated paths, and protects surrounding vegetation. His work ensures that visitors can enjoy the park while reducing their environmental footprint, aligning perfectly with the goal of maintaining Dearborn Park as a sustainable and welcoming green space for the community.
